Rationale
The section was expanded to include specific clinical contexts for both arterial and venous thrombosis. Atrial fibrillation was added as a critical source of arterial thromboembolism using the latest AHA guidelines. Portal vein thrombosis was added as an important atypical site for venous thrombosis using the Baveno VII consensus, providing a more comprehensive overview for a vascular surgery text. Abbreviations were expanded on first use.

Arterial thrombosis is platelet-driven,primarily whileplatelet-driven and often occurs in the setting of atherosclerosis or cardioembolic sources such as atrial fibrillation (AF) [@aha2023-b]. In contrast, venous thrombosis is fibrin-rich.typically Bothfibrin-rich involveand involves the coagulation cascade and interplay between clotting factors and the endothelium. While most commonly occurring in the deep veins of the lower extremities, venous thrombosis can also involve atypical sites such as the portal vein [@baveno2021]. Pulmonary embolism (PE) arises from the embolization of venous thrombi [@rutherford2018-rutherford].
